Registration for the 2022 edition of the Brazilian Ocean Olympics (O2) is now open. Interested parties have until September 9 to choose one of the three available modalities: Knowledge, Socio-environmental Project and Artistic, cultural and/or technological production. There will be four themes: Women in Science; Fisheries and artisanal aquaculture; Climate change; and Bicentennial of Independence. The modalities are open to all society and ages.
The competition is organized by the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), by the Science at Sea Program, and by the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), through Maré de Ciência. The initiative has the support of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the collaboration of UNESCO and the Secretariat of the Interministerial Commission for the Resources of the Sea.
O2 is an educational project, involving formal and non-formal education across the country, to promote oceanic culture, that is, understanding the role of the ocean in our lives and the influence of our actions on the ocean. The initiative contributes to the effort made in Brazil for the Ocean Science Decade, which runs until 2030.
In 2022, 45 students from public schools who participate in the Knowledge modality, and obtain the highest scores in the tests, will be awarded Junior Scientific Initiation scholarships from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq/MCTI). In addition to the grade, the selection criteria for scholarship recipients involve a balanced distribution among the five regions of the country and the proportion of 60% for girls.
Students awarded with Scientific Initiation Scholarships, as well as those works in the Socio-environmental Project and Artistic, cultural and/or technological production modalities that stand out, will have their names and projects published on the official website of the Decade of Ocean Science – Brazil.
The Brazilian Ocean Olympics works with scientific concepts, pedagogical activities and local realities in a proactive, innovative, inter and transdisciplinary way. By stimulating and expanding the visibility of pedagogical practices and socio-environmental actions from North to South and from East to West of the country, O2 is an opportunity for collaborative learning and a positive transformation of Brazilian education.
The competition is also an invitation to the development and broad sharing of actions involving education, science and citizenship for sustainable development. The first edition, held in 2021, was attended by more than 3,300 students and citizens from 17 Federation Units. There was engagement, promotion of knowledge and projects with quality productions on ocean culture.
