On World Refugee Day, celebrated every June 20, an important instrument for the reception of this public in Brazil is remembered. Operation Acolhida, which receives Venezuelans who cross the border in search of better living conditions, registered 76,398 citizens of the neighboring country who were internalized by May 2022. The strategy allows for the relocation of these people from Roraima to other Brazilian states and has the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR/UN).

The Operation provides emergency assistance to Venezuelan refugees and immigrants who enter Brazil through the border with Roraima, organizing their arrival, seeking social and economic insertion, and supporting the search for employment and housing, mainly in the municipalities of Boa Vista and Pacaraima.

Since the beginning of the Operation, refugees and immigrants have already been internalized to 836 municipalities. Manaus with 5,287 Venezuelans, Curitiba with 5,084, and São Paulo with 4,196, were the cities that most received citizens from the neighboring country. The three southern states are the record holders in this reception. For Santa Catarina, 13,383 people were internalized, followed by Paraná (13,199) and Rio Grande do Sul (11,328) until the last month.

In addition to UNHCR, the work is carried out in partnership with the Armed Forces, the Federal Police; the Federal Revenue; the Public Defender's Office (DPU); the Court of Justice of Roraima; the International Organization for Migration (IOM); the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF); the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

In addition to the internalization work, it is estimated that, in the last five years, more than 700,000 Venezuelans have crossed the border with Brazil, according to data from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. According to information from the Federal Revenue, more than 378 thousand CPFs were issued.

According to UN estimates, more than five million people have been forced to leave Venezuela in search of better living conditions in recent years and Brazil is one of the five most sought after destinations.

world refugee day
The date is an occasion to promote empathy and understanding around this situation and to recognize the resilience of refugee people in rebuilding their lives. World Refugee Day was celebrated globally for the first time on 20 June 2001, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. It was originally known as Africa Refugee Day, before the United Nations General Assembly officially designated it as an international date in December 2000.
